In an effort to inform and educate the populations of the Caribbean about Glaucoma, \u201cthe thief of sight\u201d – Glaucoma Watch<\/strong> will keep you up-to-date with the latest information about Glaucoma symptoms, treatment and research in our region.<\/p>\n

We will seek to clarify the myths and facts surrounding this disease and also offer hope through our stories of inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cNinety percent of Blindness <\/span>Caused by Poverty in <\/span><\/strong>Developing Countries<\/strong>\u201d <\/span>: <\/span>World Glaucoma Week is a reminder to every one, that Glaucoma is a major public health concern. Because the disease is a leading cause of permanent blindness among adults in their middle years and older, it poses a significant potential <\/span>challenge to the well-being of affected individuals, their families\u2019 communities and national economies. <\/span>Page 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

“World Glaucoma Week”<\/strong> : <\/span>World Glaucoma Week is a joint global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association and the World <\/span>Glaucoma Patients Association to raise awareness of this condition. <\/span>In a video produced by the Caribbean Council for the Blind (CCB), Dr. Shailendra Sugrim, a Consultant <\/span>Ophthalmologist and Glaucoma Specialist at the Georgetown Public Hospital shares his knowledge about <\/span>the prevalence of Glaucoma in Guyana and the wider Caribbean.” P<\/span>age 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Khetura Porter’s Story”<\/strong> : Khetura Porter has been battling Glaucoma for several years. <\/span>She welcomed us into her home in the western Jamaican <\/span>parish of Westmoreland where she shared with us her story <\/span>on the fight against Glaucoma<\/span>. Page 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Only Two Eyes”<\/strong> : Mr. O’Brian “Spriggy” Norton got what he calls the shock <\/span>of his life only a few years ago when he was diagnosed <\/span>with Glaucoma. Today his passion is that of telling others <\/span>about the danger of Glaucoma.<\/span> Page 3.<\/span><\/p>\n
