PREVALENCE OF BLINDNESS AND VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AMONG ADULTS AND CHILDREN IN BARBADOS<\/span><\/strong> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Estimated number of adults who are functionally blind (1% of the total population i.e. 1% of 293,000) = 2,930<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Estimated number of adults with low vision (3% of total population, i.e. 3% of <\/span>293,000) = 8,790<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Estimated number of children who are functionally blind (1 in every thousand <\/span>children of school age) = 41<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Estimated number of children with low vision (3 in every thousand children of <\/span>school age) = 123<\/span> <\/p>\n

History of NUSB<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The National United Society of the Blind was founded in 1974 with a view of giving better services to persons <\/span>who are blind and visually impaired. It is an <\/span>Organisational Member of the Caribbean Council for the <\/span>Blind.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Mission and Vision<\/strong> <\/p>\n

To be the leading organisation providing services for persons who are blind and visually impaired in <\/span>Barbados.<\/span> <\/p>\n

To bring light where there is darkness, strength where there is weakness, through education, motivation and <\/span>mutual respect.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Programmes\/Services offered<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The organization is moving towards offering improved services in the areas of:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Academic Qualifications, Vocational Training, further Public Awareness, Outreach <\/span>Programmes<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Such programmes will enhance the personal development of persons who are blind and <\/span>visually impaired to keep abreast of the <\/span>changing times.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Anthony Spencer Scholarship Award<\/p>\n

In loving Memory of the late ANTHONY SPENCER, a truly great stalwart of the <\/span>organization and the disabled movement, <\/span>who tragically lost his life in a car accident, <\/span>the Members of the Organization have <\/span>endorsed the Executive\u2019s commitment to a <\/span>series of fund-raising events. Emphasis is p<\/span>laced on raising funds to equip children, <\/span>young persons and adults who are blind or <\/span>visually impaired with the necessary <\/span>assistive instruments, (e.g. gadgets, course <\/span>fees, etc) which will help to breakdown barriers <\/span>of exclusion to education<\/span> <\/p>\n

Main Activities undertaken (on a monthly\/yearly basis):<\/span><\/strong> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Annual Fundraising Sponsored Walk<\/p>\n

\u2022 Public Eye Screening<\/p>\n

\u2022 Promotion and Public Awareness of Assistive Aids used by the Blind<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u2022 Other Outreach Programs which focus on Eye Diseases and applicable technological <\/span>advancements<\/span> <\/p>\n

The Society recently became a member of <\/span>International Blind Sports Association (IBSA); by <\/span>extension we collaborate with the local Paralympics <\/span>Association of Barbados (PAB) and we are <\/span>recognised by the National Sports Council as the <\/span>body which represents sports (except Blind Cricket) <\/span>for persons who are blind and visually impaired.<\/span> <\/p>\n

International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) is registered as a non-profit, public interest body in <\/span>Spain, whose mandate is to promote the integration <\/span>of disabled people in general, and persons who are <\/span>blind in particular.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Sports can help them overcome their disability by strengthening their self-esteem and their ability to <\/span>overcome difficulties and aid with normalisation in <\/span>their living environment. In short, sports help to <\/span>bring about the complete fulfillment of athletes who <\/span>are blind and visually impaired.<\/span> <\/p>\n
